Built from the official paper

The structure, the item counts and the answer letters come from CAPLE’s own model exam and its published answer key. Every fact on this site links to its source.

Original material

Nothing here is a copy of a CAPLE paper. The exam is reproduced; the texts, notices and recordings are written for this site.

European Portuguese

Written and recorded in the Portuguese of Portugal — telemóvel, autocarro, estar a fazer. The exam is not marked in Brazilian Portuguese.

How it works

Three steps, and the third is the one that matters.

  1. 1

    Find out where you are

Sit one full paper under exam conditions. You get a mark per component and a classification on CAPLE’s own scale.

  2. 2

    Work on the weak part

Practise a single component at a time — the listening that goes too fast, the 80-word email, the questions about a notice.

  3. 3

    Sit it again, timed

The point is not knowing the answers. It is finishing the written paper inside 75 minutes without running out of time on the writing.

The four things the exam marks

Practise them separately, then together.

Compreensão da Leitura

Reading

  • ·Phone messages matched to situations
  • ·Small ads, opening hours and public notices
  • ·A letter with sentence halves to join
  • ·One longer text with five questions

Produção Escrita

Writing

  • ·A 25–35 word reply to a message
  • ·A 60–80 word email, continuing a printed opening
  • ·Marked on task, range and accuracy
  • ·Feedback in your language, corrections in Portuguese

Compreensão do Oral

Listening

  • ·Ten short recordings, fifteen questions
  • ·Ten sentences matched to ten places
  • ·Played twice, exactly as in the exam
  • ·No replay button — the recording controls the repeat

Produção Oral

Speaking

  • ·Talking about yourself
  • ·A situation to act out
  • ·A short conversation about everyday events
  • ·Record your answer and get it marked

The parts a machine can mark, marked

Reading and listening mark themselves — every answer is a letter. Writing and speaking are where people actually lose the exam, and where a practice paper is usually silent.

  • Your two written texts marked on task, range and accuracy
  • Your recorded answers transcribed and marked
  • Corrections in Portuguese, explanation in your own language
  • Every competitor stops at the speaking part. This does not.

Questions

Is this the official exam?

No. CIPLE is set and marked by CAPLE at the University of Lisbon, and you register with them or with an approved centre. This site is preparation only and issues no certificate.

Do I need CIPLE for Portuguese nationality?

You need to prove Portuguese at A2 or above. CIPLE is one of the ways, and CAPLE’s own FAQ names it as the minimum level for nationality. There are two others, and they are compared on a separate page — including when the free one is the better choice.

What is the pass mark?

55% overall. CAPLE publishes that single threshold and nothing else; several preparation sites also claim a minimum in each component, but CAPLE does not say so, so this site does not treat it as a rule.

Is the speaking part really practised?

You record your answers to the three official parts and they are marked. It is not a pair exam with a live examiner — nothing online is — but it is closer than a list of topics to think about.

Which Portuguese?

European Portuguese. The vocabulary, the spelling and the recordings are the Portuguese of Portugal.
